Hopkins, Belize: Short and Sweet

The vibes in Hopkins are immaculate.

What else can one say? It’s a cool little beach village with outstanding places to eat and activities ranging from effortlessly chill to a full complement of water or land-based activities. It’s easy to find yourself in the same restaurants and beach bars day in and day out once you discover a few that speak to you. At least one of them inevitably will. It’s an easy place to learn the basics about the town quickly, and even with lots of other people visiting the area, the locals remember you and welcome you back warmly.  They know what you’re thinking. You’re already trying to determine if you can quit your day job and somehow move down instead of going back to reality.

There’s a feeling in Hopkins that you’re a regular,

even if you’ve only just arrived. I first visited Hopkins a little over four years ago and had an absolute blast- think hidden bioluminescent bays, joining local women for early morning coffee, and sitting beneath picture-perfect palm trees swaying in gentle breezes.  Although I’ve been back a few times for day trips, I needed to visit again with more purpose, or perhaps, with no purpose at all beyond soaking up those immaculate vibes. It’s an amazing and unique part of the world typically blessed with amazing weather, so per usual, Hopkins provided!

“What’s the plan? A six-pack on the beach?”

It’s time to pay the check so I walk up to the counter as Peer figures out my tab. I’ve just had one of the best breakfasts of my life. I’m enjoying the textbook example of immaculate vibes: Peer’s Place, a restaurant, and bar steps from the sea. Surrounded by sand and serving fantastic food with cold drinks, I first visited years back on my original Hopkins journey, and I’m pleased to report it has only gotten better with age. Now 12 years old, Peer’s is a testament to creating the ideal hospitality experience: find a tremendous location, figure out your niche, and do it better than everyone else.  Easier said than done, but Peer makes it look easy.

He sees a lot of tourists due to his location just off the beach,

but also expats and local families because of his personal touch and outstanding menu. Ranging from the traditional Belizean breakfast of eggs, salsa, beans, fruits, and fry jacks to the famous Peer’s Pancakes with bananas, coconut, and cinnamon, breakfast served until noon never tasted so good. And how can you beat starting your day with a good cup of coffee, enjoying that view?  Luckily if you’re getting a late start or have an early morning Scarlet Macaw tour, Peer’s Place is open for lunch and dinner with sandwiches, salads, pasta, and a fair selection for vegans and vegetarians alike. They also provide cold beer and a decently stocked bar.  “You know for many people a six-pack and the beach is an ideal afternoon,” Peer opines. Yes, Peer. Yes, it is.
